Tektites and impactites

Tektites and impactites are of terrestrial origin, but were formed by a meteorite impact that released a huge amount of energy and melted the Earth's surface, turning it into natural glass. This was then found in the vicinity of the impact (impacities) or, in the case of tektites, was swept away, often hundreds or thousands of kilometres away. During its flight, it solidified into beautiful shapes. The soil, where it hid from discovery for many millions of years, then finished the job.
