Tektites and impactites are of terrestrial origin, but were formed during a meteorite impact, which released an enormous amount of energy, melted the Earth's surface, and turned it into natural glass. This was then found near the impact site (impactites), or in the case of tektites, was ejected often hundreds to thousands of kilometers away. During their flight, the Earth's surface solidified into beautiful shapes. The soil, in which the glass remained hidden for many millions of years before being found, then completed the masterpiece.

Impactites are rocks created by the direct transformation (metamorphism) of target rocks at the impact site due to extreme pressure and temperature during impact. Tektites are natural glasses formed as a result of the impact, but unlike impactites, they were ejected high into the atmosphere (up to the exosphere) and then landed at a great distance from the crater. Both of these forms of impact material represent rare geological artifacts whose study allows us to better understand the extreme forces that shaped the surface of the Earth.
