Description of the Hassi Messaoud 001 meteorite
How can a piece of Mars reach Earth? When a large asteroid strikes the Martian surface, fragments of rock can be ejected at such high speed that they escape the planet’s gravity and begin a journey through space. Some of these fragments eventually cross paths with Earth and fall to its surface as Martian meteorites.
Hassi Messaoud 001 is one of these genuine pieces of Mars. It belongs to the nakhlites, a rare group of Martian meteorites formed from volcanic rocks. It contains minerals such as olivine and augite, which provide scientists with valuable information about the geological and volcanic history of the Red Planet.
Every specimen therefore carries an extraordinary story: it formed on Mars, was blasted into space by an impact and, after a long journey, eventually landed on Earth.
