Product detailed description

Ksar Ghilane 022 is an extremely rare meteorite discovered in 2023 near the Ksar Ghilane oasis in southern Tunisia. It belongs to the so-called ungrouped achondrites and is characterized by a unique combination of minerals - in particular iron-free augite and rare sulphides such as oldhamite, which has never been observed in any other meteorite before.

Its spectral properties, a steep red slope and the absence of the usual absorption bands, are similar to the surface of Mercury, although the actual origin from that planet cannot yet be confirmed. However, if it is not from Mercury, it comes from a planet that was very similar to it and orbited close to the Sun early in the Solar System's evolution.

The BepiColombo mission, which will reach Mercury in 2026, could provide key comparative data that will further test the hypothesis of Ksar Ghilane 022's origin.
